I've always had the impression that big cities are full of people rushing about and being to busy to be kind. I didn't find that to be true for DC. I saw people willing to offer help and offer seats on the Metro.
That's one more reason LoW thinks DC rocks.

We do miss the Metro already. And, the wonderful history there, it is amazing. A perfect place to "rock" a family trip! Glad you had fun.
