Over the weekend our kind, retired neighbor- who lives directly across the street from us- came over with a bag full of pecans in their shell.
.
"The Lord has so been kind to us!" said he, as he told of the bounty of pecans on his parents property.
.
Liquid Gold, I thought, as I recalled the out-of-this-world prices of pecans for the past few years. And as I thought of all the upcoming Holiday baking.
.
We thanked him kindly and I was prepared to shell pecans that evening, while watching TV.
.
At the crack of the first nut Zoe saw some fun in the chore, she was by my side, ready to be my helper.
.
The first pecan wasn't any good however. Neither was the second, third or fourth.
.
Old nuts.
.
Bummer.
.
So Zoe said, "Can I have them?? I still want to crack them!"
.
All evening, the bag of pecans had a small crowd of 2 or 3 gathered around. Only one nut cracker though. "My turn"...."I get to crack the next one..."
.
The 18 year old couldn't even resist.
.
It was an activity that kept kids busy and entertained well into the next day.
.
The Lord had been kind! The kids thoroughly enjoyed the activity.
.
It was the most interesting Saturday boredom buster we've had in a while.
.
Old nuts. Who knew?!

It's always an amazing thing the effect of something that sometimes we think are insignificant have on kids. Who seriously thought cracking nuts could actually get kids to enjoy one another without using any electronic entertainment. The Lord has been kind indeed.

By the way...stop by my place and enter my give-away, my first ever so I'm excited about it.
